Sound the trumpets – the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra (SJO) is about to start another season full of swing with the help of some international talent.

Renowned trumpet player Wayne Bergeron will help kick off the SJO season on Oct. 12 at the Broadway Theatre. Titled ‘Trumpet Triumph: An Evening with Wayne Bergeron,’ the concert will feature a combination of jazz and brass with the addition of the Saskatoon Brass Band (SBB).

“Wayne is truly a world-class talent who has done some fantastic and varied things in his career from playing in (renowned Canadian musician) Maynard Ferguson’s band to performing on many notable TV and Hollywood film soundtracks,” SJO artistic director Dean McNeill said.

Bergeron’s track record on the silver screen is phenomenally impressive. Perhaps best known for his high-pitched performance playing the trumpet for The Incredibles, Bergeron has also contributed to other Disney and Pixar productions including Frozen, Toy Story 3 and The Incredibles 2. Other movies on Bergeron’s resume include Despicable Me, Dreamgirls, West Side Story (2021), La La Land and so much more.

And that impressive filmography doesn’t even include the plethora of top-tier musicians Bergeron has played alongside for other concerts and recordings.

Saturday night’s concert will begin with a set by the SBB before handing the reins over to Bergeron and the SJO, where Bergeron will showcase “his virtuosic trumpet skills across a range of jazz and brass instruments,” according to the SJO press release.

In addition to playing with the SJO, Bergeron is giving a free admission masterclass at the University of Saskatchewan’s Education Building on Oct. 12 from 10:30 to noon.

“The SJO is beyond excited to be sharing the concert stage with the world renowned trumpeter Wayne Bergeron,” McNeill said. “We are truly honoured that Wayne was willing to make the time in his very busy schedule to come to our city to share his wonderful musicianship with our community.”
